Gel Manicures & Pedicures

Gel manicures and pedicures are specialized nail services that utilize a gel-based polish formula cured under a specific UV or LED light. This process creates a hard, durable, and instantly dry finish that offers superior longevity compared to traditional nail lacquer.

1. The Product and Curing Mechanism

The core difference between a gel service and a traditional polish lies in the chemical composition and the required curing process.

Aspect & Description

  • The Polish Gel polish is thicker than standard lacquer and contains acrylic monomers that need a specific light source to harden (polymerize).

  • Curing Process Each layer of gel polish (base coat, color coat, and top coat) must be exposed to a UV or LED light lamp for 30 seconds to two minutes. This process instantly hardens the polish, eliminating drying time.

  • Durability Gel manicures typically last for 2 to 3 weeks without chipping, fading, or peeling. Gel pedicures can last even longer (4+ weeks).

  • Finish The result is a high-shine, chip-resistant, and flawless finish.

2. The Step-by-Step Procedure

The service involves a standard nail preparation followed by the specialized gel application steps.

Manicure/Pedicure Prep (Essential)

  1. Shaping & Filing: Nails are trimmed and filed to the client's desired shape.

  2. Cuticle Care: Cuticles are pushed back and gently trimmed if necessary.

  3. Buffing: The nail plate surface is lightly buffed to remove shine and oils, creating a porous surface for the gel to adhere to.

Gel Application

  1. Base Coat: A thin layer of gel base coat is applied and cured under the lamp. This protects the natural nail and helps the color adhere.

  2. Color Coats: One or two thin layers of the colored gel polish are applied, with each layer cured separately under the lamp.

  3. Top Coat: A gel top coat is applied and cured for a final time. This provides the durable, high-gloss finish.

  4. Wiping: A cotton pad soaked in an alcohol solution is used to wipe away the sticky residue (the inhibition layer), revealing the final hard, dry polish.

3. Safe Removal Process

The removal of gel polish is a crucial step that distinguishes the service and requires specialized care to prevent damage to the natural nail.

  • Soaking: The polished surface is typically roughed up with a file, and then the nails are wrapped in cotton soaked in Acetone. Aluminum foil is used to hold the cotton pads firmly in place.

  • Waiting Time: The nails must soak for approximately 10 to 15 minutes, allowing the gel to soften and lift off the nail plate.

  • Gentle Scraping: The softened gel is then gently pushed off using a wooden or metal pusher. The natural nail should never be forcefully peeled or scraped, as this causes severe damage to the nail plate.

4. Advantages for a Mobile Spa Service

Offering Gel services is highly beneficial for a mobile spa:

  • No Drying Time: Clients can immediately use their hands and feet without fear of smudging, which is perfect for busy clients in a hotel or villa setting.

  • Premium Pricing: Due to the specialized product and longevity, gel services command a higher price point than traditional manicures.
